Terpene are ecological substances mainly produced by plants. They are known to produce the “aroma and taste” that people perceive.

They are also said to play an important role in enhancing the entourage effect of cannabinoids. Terpene are made up of a continuous unit of five carbon molecules called isoprenes, which are found in large quantities in essential oils extracted from plants.

Terpene are synthesized by synthesizing two or more of these isoprenes, and are called as follows depending on the number of terpene synthesized.

Contents

  • 1 Types of terpene
  • 2 Relationship with Cannabinoids

Types of terpene

○ Monoterpene (C10) = 2 or more isoprene
It is an aromatic component of citrus fruits and roses, and there are about 400 monoterpenes in nature. Major components include: pinene, limonene, camphor, and menthol.

○Sesquiterpenes (C15) = 3 or more isoprenes.
There are many types of Sesquiterpenes, but only 20 of them are considered important for flavors and fragrances. Among them, nerolydol, clove, santonin, casinene, and casinol are the most important.

○Diterpenes (C20) = 4 or more isoprenes
There are retinol, retinal, phytol, taxol, geraniol, etc.

○Cesterpene (C25) = 5 or more isoprenes
It is found in fungi, plants and insects, such as geranyl farnesol.

○Triterpenes (C30) = 6 or more isoprenes
Biological activities such as anticancer effects in mushrooms and constituent carrots are found, such as squalene, limonine, cameliagenin, and lanosterol.

Relationship with Cannabinoids

Among the terpene with many different names, one of the sesquiterpenes, beta-caryophyllene, is said to be closely related to cannabinoids.

This is because beta-caryophyllene is an agonist at CB2, one of the cannabinoid receptors. This means that some sesquiterpenes work similarly to endogenous cannabinoids and can have a higher

They are also said to play an important role in enhancing the entourage effect of cannabinoids. Terpene are made up of a continuous unit of five carbon molecules called isoprenes, which are found in large quantities in essential oils extracted from plants.
